Polar night & midnight sun: Far North photo gallery

Are you amazed by the landscapes under the extreme lights and nights? We are ourselves enamored with the Far North and share this wonder. Take a short journey with us through these magical lands whose landscapes are worth the efforts of circadian adaptation.

Do you want to know the length of today’s sunshine in your Far North location? Check our Polar Daylight Tracker by cities and latitudes.

Our journey begins in Northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle. Tromsø (69°N40) is home to the world’s northermost university, Universitetet i Tromsø – Norges arktiske universitet.

Not far to the west lies the marvelous island of Sommarøy. Under the eternal sun of late spring, the landscapes invite hiking.

A great adventure takes us to the North Cape: nine hours of roads and the vegetation thins from birch woodlands to fellfield vegetation and Arctic tundra. Untouched mountainous landscapes, blue sky, permanent snowfields, blue springs and torrents, wild nature as far as the eye can see. Adventurous wild reindeer cross the road in places.

Back in Tromsø, a one-hour-forty-minute flight northward brings us to Svalbard. It is the polar night and polar bears roam around the settlement of Longyearbyen. We brave the danger and set out to trek among breathtaking mountain landscapes, at ‑30°C.
